Coupled with talented freshmen and plenty of experience, the Russellville Lady Indians made history Saturday at the Class 1 State Cross Country Championships at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.

They ran themselves into first place, beating out Midway by a point, to take home a notable title.

"This is the first girls state team championship of any kind for our school," Russellville coach Craig Miller said. "Our girls' goal this year was to try to be state champions."

Other area all-staters in Class 1 were Addie Mengwasser of Chamois (11th, 21:50.48), Devin Michel of Vienna (20th, 22:20.13) and Melanie Bower of Linn (25th, 22:28.16).

On the boys side, the Linn Wildcats are starting a streak much like the eight straight trophies the girls team won from 1998-2005.

The Wildcats finished fourth last year in Class 2. They moved back down to Class 1 this year and nearly ran their way to a championship.
