Gov. Jay Nixon has appointed 12 Missouri residents to a commission that will decide whether to recommend pay raises for elected state officials.
Missouri's Constitution requires the salary commission to meet every two years and to make recommendations by Dec. 1 on salaries for judges, legislators and elected executives. Any pay raises automatically take effect unless rejected by two-thirds of the House and Senate.
Two years ago, the commission recommended that elected officials receive whatever cost-of-living raise is given to state employees, with an extra boost for associate circuit judges. But lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected those raises.
