Darth Vader and a storm trooper bopped along to "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" as nearly 50 people braved the brisk chill Thursday to kick off The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign. The music was provided by Leann Meyer's choir classes from Lewis and Clark Middle School. Then the school's student council made the first donation toward the 2010 goal of $223,000 from proceeds collected at the School Store, where snacks, school supplies and various spirit items were available during parent teacher conferences. Recruiting volunteers, like the Star Wars 70th Explorer Garrison, will be essential to The Salvation Army reaching its goal. Several local churches already have signed up for times to ring the bells and man the kettles. Youths from First Christian Church have seen those who benefit from the kettle campaign as they serve a meal each month at the Center of Hope, said Kristie McGonegal, minister of Christian Education and Family Enrichment.
