Symphony Orchestra plans concert

A Salute to Armed Forces Veterans will open the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Richardson Auditorium on the Lincoln University campus.

"Hymn to the Fallen" by John Williams from the movie "Saving Private Ryan" will be featured.

Then, the Capital City Children's Choir and the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra Chorus will join the symphony on stage for Carl Orff's setting of 24 poems in "Carmina Burana."

Latin for "Songs from Beuern," the piece is named after a manuscript of 254 poems and dramatic texts from the 11th and 12th centuries written by wandering scholars, students and clergy. The collection was discovered in 1803 in a Bavarian Benedictine monastery.

The symphony chorus is conducted by Beth Dampf and accompanied by Beth Eckles.

Vocal soloists at Tuesday's performance will include Carl Beach, Carol Beach, Cari Collins, Rebecca Comley, Ian Linsenfelser, Ruth Robertson, Bill Toups and Kristin Van De Velde.

And the children's chorus is directed by Lauri Carr, Elaine Foster, Ann Harris and Karel Lowery. The choir was organized in 2001 to give elementary students in the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grades an opportunity to sing in an auditioned choir.
