Schweich wins Mo. auditor race, knocks off Montee

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Republican challenger Tom Schweich has defeated Democrat state Auditor Susan Montee, foiling the incumbent's re-election bid.

Schweich is a former State Department official who has worked on anti-terrorism, anti-narcotics and other law enforcement issues in Afghanistan and several other countries. He had never sought elected office.

Montee is an accountant and lawyer and was first elected in 2006. She becomes just the third state auditor to lose re-election in the past 40 years.

The auditor's campaign was fought largely in the shadows of Missouri's contentious U.S. Senate campaign. Schweich and Montee each touted their credentials and attempted to create doubts about the other's political independence.
