CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Authorities say a 45-year-old southeast Missouri man shot and injured his mother, then turned the gun on himself.
The shootings happened Monday morning at a home in rural Cape Girardeau County. Police told the Southeast Missourian that Charlie Ussery died of a self-inflicted gunshot. His mother, 64-year-old Lana Ussery, is hospitalized in stable condition.
Coroner John Clifton says the mother and son may have been struggling over a gun.
The sheriff's department received a series of hang-up calls from the residence about 3:50 a.m. A woman then called to say she had been shot. Witnesses who had been at the home told police they had witnessed a man shoot the woman, and then himself.
