Area players named to all-state football teams

The final season awards for high school football were handed out today, as 17 area players were named to the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association's all-state teams.

Tipton led the area schools with four players selected to the Class 1 teams.

Helias had three players land on the Class 4 teams, while the Jefferson City Jays had two make the Class 6 teams. Also with two players picked were Blair Oaks, South Callaway and Versailles. California and Southern Boone had one each.

J.J. Johnson, a senior offensive lineman, was a key to the Jays' running game, as he helped Jefferson City rush for nearly 3,000 yards this season. Johnson was named to the first-team.

Kody Walker of Jefferson City, a University of Arkansas recruit, landed on the second team at running back.

Zach Steck and Greg Lorang made the Class 4 first-team defense for Helias. Steck, a senior linebacker, led the Crusaders with 105 tackles. Lorang paced the team with six interceptions and landed on on the team in the secondary.

Charlie Oberkrom was named to the second-team on offense as a lineman. The senior helped Helias rush for 2,200 yards this season.

Brad Richter and Ben Cooper landed on the Class 2 team for Blair Oaks. Richter made the second-team offense as a lineman, while Cooper was named to the second-team defense as a defensive back.

South Callaway's Will Brandt and Hunter Leeper also made the Class 2 teams. Brandt was a first-team selection on offense at wide receiver, while Leeper made the second-team defense at linebacker.

In Class 1, Cameron Backes of Tipton was named a first-team defensive back. Stephen Dorsey was a second-team selection at offensive lineman, while Cub Reckner was named to the second-team defense at lineman. Rustin Bruce made the second-team defense at punter.

Versailles' Dane Wenger and Maurice Moyer made the second-team on defense in Class 3. Wenger was picked at linebacker, while Moyer made the team at punter.

Pedro Corona of California landed on the second-team on defense in Class 3 at lineman. Southern Boone's Tyler Grethen made the Class 3 second-team on offense at running back.
