Missouri woman who claimed child was abducted charged

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A western Missouri woman whose report that her daughter had been abducted prompted a two-state search has been charged with making a false report.

Cass County authorities on Thursday charged Sharon Kay Duffey with one misdemeanor count in the Nov. 11 incident. She told authorities that a stranger had taken her 2-year-old daughter from her home in East Lynne, about 35 miles south of Kansas City.

Investigators say in court documents that Duffey was aware that the child's father was coming to the home to take the child to his home in Iowa. Family members said at the time that Duffey was mildly mentally disabled.

About 10 hours after the Duffey reported the child gone, the Iowa Highway Patrol found her with took two adults, including her father. The adults were arrested but later released.
