December 19th, 2010 in News

A sobriety checkpoint Friday night in eastern Cole County ended with eight violations being found.

According to Cole County Sheriff Greg White, his deputies and members of the Missouri Highway Patrol set up the checkpoint at U.S. 50 and Big Meadows.

White said U.S. 50 is statistically the second most dangerous highway in the county; U.S. 54 running through the south part of the county is the most dangerous. There were 140 cars checked.

The sheriff's department was awarded $26,250 in traffic grants for 2010-2011, a 37 percent increase from 2009-2010. Five sobriety checkpoints will be conducted, with the funds paying for overtime for the deputies.

There have been three alcohol related traffic deaths in Cole County in 2010.
