Area soccer players get all-state recognition from coaches

A total of 10 area players have earned all-state honors from the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association.

Fatima and Southern Boone led the way with three players each selected to the Class 1 squad. Helias had two players on the Class 2 team, while Jefferson City had one in Class 3 and Linn had one in Class 1.

Nick Anglen, a Jefferson City senior, was a second-team Class 3 selection as a midfielder. A veteran presence on a young Jays team, Anglen had two goals and a team-high 11 assists this season. Jefferson City advanced to the finals of the district tournament, falling 1-0 in penalty kicks to Rock Bridge. The Bruins advanced to the Final Four, tying for third.

Will Grefrath, a Helias senior, was a first-team selection as a defender in Class 2. Grefrath had one goal, a game-winner, and three assists this season and was a key cog in a Helias defense that allowed just 19 goals and posted nine shutouts.

Blake Wenzel, also a senior at Helias, was a second-team pick in Class 2 at forward. Wenzel led the Crusaders in scoring with nine goals and six assists. Three of his goals were game-winners.

Nevan Woehr, a junior from Fatima, was a first-team selection at goalkeeper in Class 1. Woehr had 10 shutouts for the district champion Comets. Fatima defeated Missouri Military Academy 2-1 in overtime in the sectional round of the playoffs before falling 1-0 to John F. Kennedy in the quarterfinals.

Also making the Class 1 team from Fatima were senior Eric Boeckmann and junior Dusty Angerer. Boeckmann totaled 22 goals this season, while Angerer was part of a defense that allowed just more than a half a goal a game.

Seth Verduin, a senior from Southern Boone, was a first-team selection as a defender. Verduin had four goals and two assists for the Eagles, who posted 10 shutouts this season.

Two Eagles forwards were honorable mention - senior E.C. Duckworth and Todd Haslag. Duckworth had 16 goals, including five game-winners, while Haslag totaled 13 goals and 17 assists.

Anthony Senevey, a senior from Linn, was a second-team pick as a midfielder. Senevey led the Wildcats to the district title game, where they fell to Fatima.

Southern Boone was the lone area team ranked in the final poll, taking the No. 10 spot in Class 1. Fatima received votes for the final Class 1 rankings.
