Recount will occur for St. Louis state Senate seat

Republican John Lamping will have to wait a little bit longer to know if he officially has won a St. Louis area state Senate seat.

Democrat Barbara Fraser has requested a recount after Lamping defeated her by 133 votes out of more than 61,000 cast in the Senate District 24 election last month. That's a difference of less than 0.3 percentage points.

Missouri law allows losing candidates to request a recount if the gap is less than 1 percentage point.

The secretary of state's office says it has until Dec. 22 to certify the results of the recount.

History is not on Fraser's side. Secretary of state spokeswoman Laura Egerdal says the largest change in recent state Senate recounts has been six votes.
