Hostage situation averted in Jefferson City

A potential hostage situation, in northwestern Jefferson City, was averted Monday evening.

Police reported getting a call around 6 p.m. of a domestic dispute in the 800 block of Eastern Air Drive, behind Bel Air Elementary School.

Neighbors told a reporter they saw a man and woman in a verbal and physical confrontation in the front yard of the home.

Police had a report of a male, with a small male child, in the front yard.

Neighbors told a reporter that the man was the child's father.

A few moments later, police received a call from a teenager in the home, who said the male had gone inside and barricaded himself in a back bedroom -- and that he had a gun.

Police formed a perimeter around the home, and then contacted the man by telephone.

Eventually, the man voluntarily came out of the home and was placed in a police car and driven out from the neighborhood.

The small male child was found safe in the home's living room.

Police did not report any possible charges in the case as of Monday night.
