Jefferson City officials on Tuesday certified a petition asking voters to repeal the city's mandatory trash/recycling program, but they said it wasn't in time to put the issue to a Nov. 2 vote.
The City Charter gives the clerk 20 days to review the signatures. The city clerk took five working days to certify the group had the required 824 signatures, finishing the review on Tuesday.
"The City Council would have to approve or reject the petition by the end of the day today," said Michelle Gleba, the city's spokeswoman, in a Tuesday afternoon news release, "which is the deadline to have it placed on the November ballot."
The council has 60 days to either adopt the petition's wording as an ordinance or place the issue on the ballot within a year.
