Man suspected of shooting Missouri trooper faces 12 felonies

HARTSVILLE, Mo. (AP) -- A Florida man suspected of shooting a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with 12 felonies including first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Court records available online show prosecutors filed the charges in Wright County last week against 32-year-old Colby Rey of Orlando, Florida.

Authorities say two troopers and a police officer were investigating reports of a suspicious vehicle Wednesday on a county road outside Mansfield, about 40 miles east of Springfield. They ordered a man to get out of his car. He refused and shot at them.

The trooper who was shot, Robert Crewse, was treated at a hospital for minor wounds.

The officers returned fire. Rey was hit several times and remains hospitalized in Springfield.

It wasn't clear Monday whether Rey has an attorney.
