Second Columbia church becomes sanctuary church

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A second church in Columbia is now designated as a sanctuary church.

Members of Rock Bridge Christian Church voted Sunday to become a sanctuary church, which means the congregation is willing to house someone who is at risk of deportation.

Rev. Sarah Klaassen said in a news release that the church's stance was in response to a recent harder line in the country on immigration policies.

Klaassen said people of faith must stand in solidarity with people in the country without legal documents who are afraid of being separated from their families.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbia became a sanctuary church in April.
