COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Columbia is extending a freeze on new permits for some multifamily housing projects in the college town.
The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/2g3q8HJ ) reports that the city council decided Monday that the freeze should continue through March 31 or when new zoning codes are approved if that happens first. The freeze initially was scheduled to end Dec. 1, but overhauling the codes is taking longer than expected.
The freeze was put in place to give the city time to review infrastructure needs. It encompasses demolition permits for structures 50 years old or older and building permits for downtown apartments, including high-density student housing.
One issue that the council has discussed is whether there is enough demand to support a boom in student housing projects.
