Columbia man charged after chase with Cole County authorities

A Columbia man faces numerous charges after a Tuesday night chase with Cole County authorities.

Charles Yelm Jr., 55, faces felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving while revoked and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. He is also charged with one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance.

A deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Yelm at the intersection of Route E and Tanner Bridge Road for a reported vehicle registration violation at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler.

The deputy activated his emergency lights, but Yelm reportedly accelerated and continued south on Route E onto Deer Run Road. Yelm attempted to elude deputies and eventually pulled into a private driveway in the 11000 block of Deer Run Road, where he was taken into custody.

Deputies searched Yelm and his vehicle and reportedly recovered more than an ounce of marijuana, 5 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Wheeler said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Yelm was being held in the Cole County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
