A Jefferson City man has been charged with attempted stealing after an incident earlier this week.

A man who was doing plumbing work in the 900 block of East High Street on Sunday afternoon reported he had seen Everett Pruitt, 19, stealing tools from his vehicle, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

When the man approached Pruitt after telling him to drop the tools, Pruitt allegedly threatened to shoot him and reached for his waistband. The man told officers he then kicked Pruitt's feet out from under him and, when Pruitt got up and started running away, the man and another witness chased him on foot.

Pruitt reportedly did not run away with any of the tools, but there were multiple tools staged behind the alleged victim's vehicle. The tools reportedly are valued at more than $750.

Pruitt was located and arrested in the 300 block of Cherry Street. There was no firearm located at the time of his arrest, according to the probable cause statement.

Attempted stealing is a class E felony.

Officers noted Pruitt has two other pending stealing charges.
