The Jefferson City NAACP is joining with several community organizations to recognize the historic election of Vice President Kamala Harris at its "Celebrating a Legacy of Firsts" event.

The organization is hosting the virtual event at 7 p.m. Thursday on Facebook live, showcasing community members who will celebrate this "historic first" with songs, poems, dance and tributes, according to a news release.

The NAACP said this event is an important moment, regardless of party affiliation, to recognize Harris' historic win, as "it is in supporting our elected officials, and those who step forward to lead as a minority, that we will achieve equality," according to the news release. Harris is the first female, first Black and first Asian-American U.S. vice president.

"As Missouri races backward to eliminate protections against discrimination and promote biased laws, we as a community will join together to recognize the accomplishments of Vice President Kamala Harris in Missouri's largest event recognizing her achievement since our citizens elected her to office," Missouri NAACP President Nimrod Chapel Jr. said. "Often, the contributions of leaders are overlooked, but not now - not in Jefferson City."
