Man dies after shootout with St. Louis police officers

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A man died after he exchanged gunfire with St. Louis police officers at an apartment complex Friday morning, police said.

St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden said in a news conference officers were called at about 10 a.m. to an apartment complex just north of Forest Park after reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers found shell casing in a hallway and entered an apartment where they believed the shots had been fired. They encountered an armed man who refused orders to drop his weapon, prompting the gun battle, Hayden said.

The officers backed out of the apartment and called for backup. The man, believed to be 39, was later found dead inside the apartment, Hayden said. Police have not released the man’s name.

No officers were injured, Hayden said.

Police did not say if the man died from gunshots fired by the officers. A medical examiner will determine cause of death, police said.

Hayden said police recovered an AR-15 rifle and a pistol from the apartment. It’s not clear which weapon the man was holding during the gun fight.
