Jefferson City couple charged with stealing items from businesses

A Jefferson City couple has been charged with felony stealing for allegedly taking items from several residences.

Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements state Ashley Allen, 33, and Walter Grace, 36, were taken into custody Tuesday.

Officers were responding to an incident at 10 Jackson St., where Grace resides, and found the couple in a U-Haul truck Allen rented.

Authorities said the entire truck bed was filled with various items. Due to recent thefts across the city, officers asked for consent to search the vehicle and Allen reportedly allowed them to do so.

Among the items in the truck were air conditioning unit parts, a new air compressor and other items authorities said had been reported stolen.

Allen allegedly told authorities she believed the items were trash because they were to the rear of several businesses and in dumpsters. Several of the items appeared to be new or gently used, officers reported.

Authorities also said Allen was on pre-trial release at the time of her arrest and had an ankle monitor with GPS tracking. The monitor provided information showing several areas where Allen had been and placed her in locations where the crimes occurred.
