Missouri man sentenced for blowing up ex-wife’s car

A man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for blowing up his ex-wife’s car outside a St. Louis home where she and the couple’s teenage son were sleeping.

Dean McBaine, 31, of Jefferson City, was sentenced Wednesday for possession of an unregistered destructive device. McBaine was also ordered to pay $34,705.21 in restitution, KTVI reported.

Prosecutors said McBaine became enraged when his ex-wife took custody of their 13-year-old son after a domestic dispute with his new wife in Jefferson City ended with him firing into a ceiling. The rounds missed McBaine’s older son, whose bedroom was in the room above. His ex-wife also filed orders of protection.

McBaine and his half-brother then constructed a bomb out of fireworks and Tiki torch fuel, and used it to blow up Motes’ Mini Cooper in front of her St. Louis home in September 2018.

McBaine was captured on surveillance video. His stepbrother, who previously pleaded guilty in the case, also cooperated with investigators.

Court records show McBaine is still facing charges in Cole County for the incident with his new wife on Aug. 17, 2018, in Jefferson City.

McBaine was indicted by a Cole County grand jury on felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child along with misdemeanor assault in this case.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Pierce Street, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Officers were called out for a disturbance where it was reported McBaine, who was intoxicated, had fired shots inside the residence that traveled into the room of a child.

His new wife said she was lying in bed with her 2-year-old child when McBaine came into the bedroom in a “violent rage.” She said McBaine threw a TV on top of her and the child.

At this time, his new wife said, a friend intervened and began fighting with McBaine. She and the child ran out of the house, and as she was running, she heard three gunshots from inside the residence. She claimed McBaine had fired a gun through the ceiling and into her 13-year-old stepson’s room. McBaine eventually was escorted out of the home by the friend and her brother. She then left the area with her children.

Officers found four bullet holes in the ceiling of the bedroom where the 13-year-old had been, along with a bullet hole in the wall above the bed. Three shell casings also were found, police reported.

He was released on bail Aug. 21, 2018, in Cole County. He was then arrested on Sept. 2 in St. Louis.
