Jefferson City man gets probation for drug charge

A Jefferson City man has been placed on five years of supervised probation in connection with a burglary case from July 2018.

Paul Herman, 32, pleaded guilty during a Wednesday hearing before Cole County Judge Dan Green to possession of a controlled substance and resisting lawful detention. He was also ordered to serve 60 days in the county jail, with credit for time served.

Another person charged in this case — Jeffery Abbott Jr., 30, of Jefferson City — is charged with delivery of a controlled substance.

The incident occurred on the lot of Eagle Stop on Missouri Boulevard, according to Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements.

Abbott was at the gas pumps, and security camera footage shows him giving Herman a bundle of narcotics. Abbott allegedly waited for Herman to leave the area on foot with the narcotics then drove away as officers arrived.

Officers spotted Herman and ordered him to stop, but he fled. Eventually they caught him in the Longhorn Steakhouse parking lot on Missouri Boulevard.

Before he was caught, Herman had thrown the package Abbott had given him. The package was field tested and found to be methamphetamine packed for sale in six small bags.

When questioned, Herman admitted he had fled because he was in possession of the drugs. He said he had gotten the drugs from Abbott.

Abbott had an active warrant for his arrest at the time of this incident. He refused to talk to officers.
