Beef cattle producers may be interested in an upcoming all-day hay school in Fulton.
"There is a lot at stake when making hay and many things to consider to make it worth your while and profitable," said Anita Ellis, livestock specialist for the University of Missouri Extension in Callaway County.
This year's Regional Hay School will be 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at 54 Country, 400 Gaylord Drive in Fulton.
As the event includes lunch and materials, registration and a $40 fee must be turned in by 4 p.m. Oct. 4. Print off a registration form at extension.missouri.edu/callaway/livestock.aspx or register at extension2.missouri.edu/events/hay-production.
This seven-hour, non-credit hay school addresses how to produce quality hay that pays, covering many aspects of hay production aspects of hay production. It's aimed at cattle producers who may already own their own hay equipment or grow their own hay, Ellis said.
Topics include the best species of forage for hay in Central Missouri, how to ensure harvested hay meets your livestock's nutritional requirements, supplements to consider adding to a hay-feeding program, how to take and interpret hay samples, how to reduce loss when storing and feeding hay, the agronomic impact on the soil, and more.
In addition, some of the event's sponsors will show off the latest haying equipment at the Implement Showcase and share about their other products and services. Event sponsors include Crown Power & Equipment, Sydenstricker, Henderson Implement, Hatton Vermeer Sales and others.
