Miller County firefighters evacuated nearby homes as they helped to contain a leak at a propane storage facility north of Iberia on Monday night.

At 7:40 p.m. Monday, Miller County 911 received a call from an area resident stating that the propane tanks at the site were screaming loudly, according to a report by the Iberia Rural Fire Protection District.

Iberia firefighters immediately requested assistance from Tuscumbia firefighters, the Miller County Sheriff's Department, the Miller County Ambulance District and the Missouri Highway Patrol.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered one of the five tanks at the facility had a large amount of propane being actively released from the pressure relief valve, the report stated.

Firefighters closed Missouri 17 to eliminate any potential ignition sources, and with the help of all agencies started a half-mile evacuation of the area around the propane tanks.

Once the propane company's technicians arrived, they were able to isolate the leak. Firefighters then used fire hoses to spray the tanks with approximately 3,500 gallons of water to cool the tanks to prevent a further release.

Once the area was considered safe, the highway was opened and residents were allowed to return to their houses. All agencies cleared the scene at 9:17 p.m.

No injuries of any emergency service personnel or residents were reported.
