While Callaway Hills Elementary School students can't really walk to school, they did find their own way to participate in Wednesday's "Walk to School Day" festivities.

The Jefferson City School District and Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities activity saw 98 percent of students walking the school's track before school began, JC Schools Healthy Schools Coordinator Kelsey Chrisman said.

Three other JC Schools buildings participated Wednesday with groups of students walking to school with staff supervision - East, South and Thorpe Gordon elementary schools.

About 10 students walked to Thorpe Gordon with Chrisman, Superintendent Larry Linthacum and Director of Communications Ryan Burns - though another later group of students also appeared to have walked to school along the same route, starting at the intersection of Monroe and East Atchison streets.

Another group of students was planned to meet at the intersection of East Dunklin and Jackson streets and walk down Jackson Street.

Chrisman said it "would be lovely" to expand walking school bus activities such as Wednesday's to more schools. She said the programming is in place, ready for "whoever wants to adopt it."

The district estimated about 20 students walked on the routes to East Elementary School on Wednesday. No estimate was immediately available for South Elementary.

Benefits of students walking to school include fewer behavioral issues in the morning, lessons in road safety and physical activity, Chrisman said.
