Jefferson City High School celebrates prom

Jefferson City High School celebrated its prom Saturday with the theme of "Masquerade."

Zaryn Kamara was chosen as the JCHS Marcullus queen and was crowned at the Marcullus assembly Friday after she was chosen through an interview process coordinated by a panel of Marcullus court women.

Zaryn Nallah Bintu Kamara is the daughter of Edith and Haroun Kamara. Zaryn is a three-year HOSA member, four-year track and field team member, and two-year student council member. She has been a scholar athlete for four years and was named a Council for Drug Free Youth Student of the Month. She plans to attend Saint Louis University and major in biology on the pre-med track.

Zaryn was escorted to the assembly by Dejan Collier and Marcel John, and she was escorted to Saturday night's dance "by all her besties."

Other members of the Marcullus court include:

Yessnia Dominique Austin-Dixon, the daughter of Jarad and Mecca Austin. Yessnia is a step team member, one-year member of the JC Fusion dance team, member of show choir and is a staff member of the Marcullus yearbook. She received a Seal of Excellence award, was awarded the best opinion piece for yearbook in 2018 and has received the Council for Drug Free Youth Scholarship. She plans to major in journalism and minor in dance and is undecided on what college to attend.

Yessnia was escorted to the assembly by Maleek Jackson and Jordan Bruner, and her escort for Saturday's dance was Jeffrey Cole.

Stevie Marie Buckley, the daughter of Shawna Diekmann and Paul Buckley. Stevie was a two-year varsity Jays dance team member. She earned a varsity letter for both of her years on dance team and has received the "Perspective of Success" award at her dance studio in 2018. She plans to attend MACC and use her A+ Scholarship Program credit for two years then attend the University of Missouri to major in finance.

Stevie was escorted to the assembly by Aidan McGinty and Ashton Stratman, and her escort for Saturday's dance was Max Hanrahan.

Valerie Holly Holt, the daughter of Todd and Stacie Holt. Valerie currently serves as student body vice president and has been a student council member for four years. She has been in Chorale for two years and has served three years as a member of the Board of Deacons at First Presbyterian Church. She was a Rotary Student of the Month for April, has received the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Outstanding Citizenship Award, and Salud Atonian. Valerie plans to attend Saint Louis University to major in international studies and Spanish and minor in economics.

Valerie was escorted to the assembly by Ben Krause and Sabien Kent, and she was escorted to Saturday's dance by Noah Gernander.

De Chanel Araya Sutton, the daughter of Dwayne and LaShena Sutton. De Chanel has been a choir member for four years, a three-year member of the Step Team and a one-year student council member. She plans to attend Tennessee State University.

De Chanel was escorted to the assembly by Mike Appiah-Brefo and Corey Suttle, and she was escorted to Saturday night's dance by Lloyd Randle.
