Walk for suicide awareness in Fulton this Saturday

A solemn procession will pace through William Woods University in Fulton on Saturday.

This weekend is the Out of Darkness Campus Walk, an American Foundation for Suicide Prevention event designed to raise awareness and funds for the AFSP.

Registration is available until noon today at bit.ly/2Jtv4Z5. Participants are encouraged to share a donation link on social media after signing up. Anyone who raises $100 by Saturday will receive an official event T-shirt, though donations will be accepted until June 30.

People may also register the day of the event at William Woods, beginning at 11 a.m. The walk will be from 1-4 p.m.

Walkers may choose to wear color-coded Mardi Gras beads: white for loss of a child, green for a personal struggle, or red for loss of a spouse or partner, for example.

A number of local businesses have offered support to the event by donating raffle prizes. Donor businesses include Substation, Beks, Tacos & Tequila, Cost Cutters, Express Yourself, Fulton Bowling Center, Jalisco, Unique Designs, Dairy Queen, Family Video, Koelling Family Chiropractic, Auto Zone and O'Reilly.

AFSP is a national nonprofit that invests in research, creates educational programs, advocates for public policy and supports survivors of suicide loss. AFSP's goal is to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.
