Write your 'Cinderella story' at annual BBBS Golf Outing

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson City Golf Outing celebrates a special anniversary this year.

The annual fundraiser is 25 years old.

A Jefferson City philanthropist, Donald R. "Bones" Libby got the ball rolling for the tournament in 1994. He continued to sponsor the tournament until his death in 2009.

The outing endured. It will take place again Aug. 9 at Oak Hills Golf Center, 932 Ellis Blvd., BBBS Director Lee Knernschield said.

Lunch will be served at noon, and the four-person scramble (best ball) begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

"We always have a nice giveaway," Knernschield said. "This year is a quarter-zip fleece pullover. We're also doing a commemorative poker chip ball marker."

Funds raised through the tournament will help support program enrollment and supervision, matching an adult (big) with a child (little), ages 6-17.

The matches are intended to last until the child graduates from high school or turns 17. The nonprofit's mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth through a professionally supported, primarily one-to-one relationship with a caring and committed volunteer.

The organization has more than 160 active matches and serves more than 250 children each year. Many children are still waiting for a big brother or sister.

Entry fees for individuals are $120. Entry fees for four-person teams are $480.

Prizes will be given out for top three finishers in flights. Some silent auction items will be available.

"You don't have to be a great golfer to win a prize," Knernschield said.

Sponsorships for the tournament are also available. The tournament is still accepting sponsorships for carts and for dedicated holes. The cart sponsorship - which places the sponsor's name on each cart - is $1,000. Hole sponsors are listed in tournament signage. It costs $100 to sponsor a hole.
