Volunteer Jessica Rost, of Springfield, prepares bins of school supplies for Saturday’s SERVE Back to School Fair. The free annual event is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Callaway Christian Church in Fulton.

SERVE's annual Back to School Fair is like a one-stop shop for summer's end - and it's all free.

This year's fair is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Callaway Christian Church, 2051 Silver Drive in Fulton. There are no income requirements - all Callaway County families with school-aged children are welcome.

"Just bring proof of address, identification and your children," SERVE outreach coordinator Jeffery Maclin said.

Services include a free backpack, haircut, health screenings (including visual, dental and hearing, and basic school supplies.

"Everyone's going to get a backpack this year," Maclin said. "We can 100 percent guarantee it."

Thanks to a backpack drive at Walmart and donations during other events, SERVE has amassed close to 1,100 backpacks, he said.

After braving the crowd and making the rounds, families can step outside for free hot dogs, chips and drinks.

"Whenever anyone's done they can eat some lunch and inhale and exhale," Maclin said.

Young ones can visit vehicles from the Fulton Police Department, Fulton Fire Department and Callaway County Sheriff's Office.

SERVE is still looking for volunteers for the event, which draws hundreds of people.

"I tell people the lines are like Black Friday in July," Maclin said. "People start lining up a couple hours before the event."

He gave a shoutout to Callaway Christian Church for hosting the event each year and whose congregants help fill out the volunteer roster. Volunteers will be tasked with handing out supplies and directing attendees through the stations.

Maclin said if a family in need can't make it to the event, they should contact SERVE in advance at 573-642-6388 so the nonprofit can set aside enough supplies.
