JC man charged with kidnapping, assault

A Jefferson City man faces charges after an alleged kidnapping.

Kristopher Johnson was charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree robbery, first-degree vehicle tampering and second-degree domestic assault.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement said Johnson had taken the children of a former romantic partner, the victim, out trick-or-treating on Halloween with her permission. When he dropped the children off at the victim's workplace Tuesday evening, he allegedly refused to relinquish her vehicle after previously agreeing a friend would pick him up from there.

The victim reportedly got into the car during the argument and attempted to put the car in park when Johnson began to drive, and they continued to struggle.

The victim called 911 around 11 p.m., but Johnson allegedly ended the call and began striking her. When she tried to exit the vehicle, she allegedly struck Johnson in the head with a glass bottle from the floorboard. She reportedly escaped after he tried to keep her back by her hair.

After a struggle for the driver's seat, Johnson allegedly drove after the victim while she escaped on foot near Southwest Boulevard and Southridge Drive.

In fear that he would keep trying to run her over, the victim returned to the car and was driven to Johnson's residence, and escaped from there to the hospital with help from a friend.

She retrieved her car from Johnson's residence and got the keys from one of his family members. Authorities observed blood stains and signs of a struggle in the vehicle, as well as injuries to the victim.

Court records show several prior convictions for Johnson, including an assault and robbery. A warrant issued Wednesday identified him as a flight risk and sought to hold him without bond.
