Fulton police continue to investigate a Tuesday night call reporting a bomb and a man with a gun at Fulton City Hall.
A City Council meeting had ended at 7:50 p.m. As usual, people including Police Chief Steve Myers mingled in the hallways for a few minutes before leaving the building.
The report was received by the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office at 9:16 p.m. Police responded and searched for explosive devices or a person with a gun, and finding nothing, cleared and secured the building.
“This is still an active investigation and we are following up on several leads,” police Lt. Jason Barnes, chief of detectives, said Wednesday morning. “The call came in after City Hall was closed, so there was no one in the building when police arrived.”
City Administrator Bill Johnson said on Wednesday morning he hadn’t noticed anything suspicious.
“Nothing’s happened in this building before,” he added. “There’s some unusual things that have happened from time to time. … This was a very isolated event.”
The city’s 2019 budget does include some items for improving interior security at city hall. Johnson said that included adding locks on doors leading to interior offices and increasing the wattage of an exterior light by the front door.
“We don’t want to turn the building into a fortress,” Johnson added.
