Jefferson City is seeking more volunteers for its committees, commissions and boards.

The city's Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, Board of Adjustment, Planning and Zoning Commission, Cultural Arts Commission, and Environmental Quality Commission have vacancies, Jefferson City Human Resources Department Director Gail Strope told the City Council Committee on Administration on Wednesday.

Animal Shelter Advisory Committee members serve three-year terms and discuss the local animal shelter's needs and development. City code requires members to operate a licensed public veterinary office in Jefferson City.

Despite their terms having expired in September 2018, two volunteers on the Animal Shelter Advisory Committee are continuing to serve until new appointments are made, Strope said.

Primarily reviewing variances and conditional use permits, the Board of Adjustment's members serve five-year terms while its alternates serve one-year terms.

Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission serve four-year terms. The commission hears several zoning and land use cases that range from rezoning proposals to planned unit development plans, among other items.

With members serving three-year terms, the Cultural Arts Commission promotes community improvement through the arts.

While the Environmental Quality Commission discusses items that benefit the environment, it has taken a broader mission of community betterment over the last two years. Members serve three-year terms.

Jefferson City has more than 24 volunteer boards and commissions, Strope said.
