FEMA food and shelter funds coming to Mid-Missouri

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Thursday it is providing funds for four Mid-Missouri counties to help feed and shelter people.

Money from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program is not intended to help people in disasters - instead, it is used to supplement feeding, sheltering and housing programs for needy communities.

Cole County is to receive $22,817. Other area counties receiving funding are: Callaway, $14,753; Moniteau, $1,816; and Osage, $1,136.

A local board comprised of people from local governments, nonprofit agencies and religious organizations is charged with overseeing the award distribution.

Public or private voluntary organizations in the included counties that are interested in applying for the program funding can download an application at unitedwaycemo.org or call the office at 573-636-4100. Or they can request an application by emailing [email protected]. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Oct. 4.

Funds may be used for provision of food, mass shelter or feeding, or supplies. Local organizations eligible for the funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency utility, food or shelter programs, and have a voluntary board (if they are a private organization).
