Jefferson City firefighters extinguish Eastland blaze

The Red Cross is helping residents whose Jefferson City home was seriously damaged after a fire early Tuesday morning.

The Jefferson City Fire Department was dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of Eastland Drive.

Upon arrival, the first fire company discovered smoke showing from the rear of a single-story brick house with a walkout basement, according to JCFD reports.

All of the home's occupants had escaped without injury and reported they had been awakened by the smoke alarms. They immediately went to the basement door, where they encountered a large amount of smoke.

Fire crews had the fire under control within 45 minutes, according to the department.

The home is reported to have suffered serious smoke damage throughout, with fire damage to the basement garage and areas above it on the first floor.

No injuries were reported.

The department is investigating the cause of the fire.

Just before 5 a.m. today, Jefferson City firefighters were called to respond to a fire at a home in the 500 block of Eastland Drive.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found smoke coming from the structure and eventually determined the fire was in the basement.

As of 5:45 a.m., Eastland was closed in both directions to allow firefighters to battle the blaze.
