American Legion to host fundraiser for patriotic roundabouts in Jefferson City

All Seasons Landscaping's Andrew Fritz uses a concrete saw to cut the capping stone that goes atop the rows of concrete stones to form the circular wall in the south roundabout on Supercenter Drive. The Jefferson City East Side Business Association is behind the project for which they've secured donations of money, materials and labor. This roundabout will house a flag pole, complete with lights so that the flag can remain up 24 hours a day.

The American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City will hold a fundraiser this weekend to raise funds for a patriotic roundabout project on the east side of town.

The "Raise the Flag Project" fundraiser will run 8 a.m.-8 p.m. May 5 at Prison Brews, 305 Ash St. Fifteen percent of sales will go toward establishing, constructing and maintaining a flagpole and other improvements at one of the roundabouts at the East McCarty and U.S. 50 intersection.

Live music will be on the patio at Prison Brews from 3-6 p.m., American Legion Project Officer Dee Dee Cryderman said.

The East Side Business Association and American Legion Post 5 have partnered to add patriotic displays to the two roundabouts.

The north roundabout will contain a 6-foot-tall eagle statue on top of a stone pedestal, while the south roundabout will have a 40-foot-tall flagpole. At the base of the pole will be a pentagon-shaped monument containing patriotic messages.

The estimated price for the project is $75,000-$80,000, ESBA President Hank Stratman said.

Several businesses - including Midwest Block and Brick, Twehous Excavating, All Seasons Landscaping and Meyer Electric Co. - have donated services toward the project, Stratman said. Even with the anticipated donations and services, he added, ESBA and the American Legion Post 5 anticipate being about $10,000 short.
