School tax levy proposition passes in New Bloomfield

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Staff in the New Bloomfield school district should see a pay boost sometime soon.

During Tuesday's municipal election, voters passed Proposition Y by 357-74 votes. The proposition increases the New Bloomfield R-2 school district's operating tax levy ceiling by 50 cents to $3.3323 per $100 of assessed valuation. The money is being drawn from the debt-service levy and will not cause any increase to tax bills, school officials have said.

The money will be used to retain qualified staff, maintain facilities and meet district operating expenses.

Of 431 votes cast, 82.8 percent were in favor of the proposition, according to preliminary results from the Callaway County clerk's office.

Superintendent Sarah Wisdom said this is the first time in a number of years that the district has increased its operating tax levy ceiling.
