Jamestown passes sales tax increase, elects Borts mayor

JAMESTOWN - Larry Borts was elected the new mayor of Jamestown with 45 votes, 51.72 percent of the total votes cast.

"I'd like to thank the people for their votes and their confidence they have in me to take care of things," Borts said.

He said his top concern is getting streets and sidewalks fixed in the city. He said he doesn't know the current budget, but streets are important to him.

"My No. 1 priority will be the sewer," Borts said.

If there are other issues, he said, he will address them once in office. He will serve a two-year term.

Dayna Coonce, who was elected in April 2017 by write-in, received 41 votes (47.13 percent) in Tuesday's election.

"I wish him well," Coonce said.

She said she enjoyed being mayor but plans to be active in the community and enjoy her retirement.

"It was a headache," Coonce said. "It was a thankless job, but I tried to be fair. I think most people understood that. I'm glad the tax increase passed."

Jamestown voters passed a 1-cent sales tax increase with 86 yes votes, 61.63 percent of the vote.

Borts said he is unfamiliar with the project but will take a look at it once he is in office.
