To clear up confusion regarding holiday parking, the Jefferson City Transportation and Traffic Commission gave its approval to not enforce time-limited parking on state holidays that do not align with city holidays.

The city does not enforce time-limited parking on holidays. However, there are three state holidays when City Hall is open but state employees are off work: Columbus Day, Lincoln's Birthday and Presidents' Day.

Since these state holidays do not align with the city's holidays, it creates confusion among drivers, Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin said.

"As a business owner in the area, I've had customers who received tickets before and were confused because they didn't know it was being monitored," said Tergin, who submitted the request. "On state holidays, the city is not enforcing parking regulations. So, on the three holidays that the city is enforcing, it's confusing because it's not consistent with the other state holidays."

The proposed request would affect time-limited parking, including parking meters and parking spaces. It would not impact the city-operated parking garage, bus zones, loading zones or handicapped spots.

The Jefferson City Public Works and Planning Committee will review the request Sept. 13 before it goes to the Jefferson City Council for final approval.

This change could impact city revenue, Jefferson City Operation Division Director Britt Smith said.
