Collision knocks driver off scooter

A Jefferson City man was injured today when a car struck the motor scooter he was driving on U.S. 50/63 in eastern Jefferson City.

Police report Melvin Earl Wolfe, 58, was transported by ambulance to University Hospital in Columbia following the 5:45 a.m. accident near Eastland Drive.

His SunL 49cc scooter was traveling eastbound when it was struck from behind by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Shelby Jean Hutchinson, 22, of Holts Summit. The impact caused Wolfe to fall from the scooter. A Honda Accord driven eastbound by Larry Thomas Lynch, 39, of Jefferson City, then struck the scooter as it slid down the highway.

Neither Hutchinson nor Lynch, who were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, reported any injuries, police said.

During the crash investigation, the ramp from Eastland Drive to eastbound 50/63 was closed and the adjacent highway was reduced to one lane for approximately an hour and a half.
