P&Z OKs rezoning for indoor sports complex

Sports players may soon have another location where they can practice their skills without worrying about the weather.

The Jefferson City Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a rezoning request Thursday night, in which the applicant hopes to construct an indoor sports practice facility.

Applicant Joe Lopez and property owner Samson Family, LLC, want to rezone 2.08 acres at 105 Jaycee Drive from M-2 General Industrial and RS-3 Residential to C-1 Neighborhood Commercial.

An indoor sports practice facility is permitted under C-1 zoning.

The 26,000-square-foot facility would contain batting cages, basketball and volleyball courts, and exercise studios, said project consultant Patrick Kremer with Central Missouri Professional Services. There would also be concession stands and viewing areas.

He said this would be an exciting opportunity that fulfills a need in the community.

Janet Samson added she thought the facility would be an asset to children in the area.

Samson Family plans to sell the property so it can be used for the indoor sports complex.

Kremer said the soon-to-be property owners have not set a projected date for construction, if the Jefferson City Council approves the rezoning.

The City Council will vote Nov. 19 on the rezoning and sports facility.

The commission also unanimously recommended approval of Aaron and Erin Clark’s request for a special exception permit to operate a short-term rental at 500 E. Miller St. The City Council will vote on the permit Nov. 19.
