Local Cub Scout packs accepting new recruits

Families whose children are interested in signing up to be Cub Scouts in the local Boy Scouts of America district can do so anytime, and an event in Jefferson City planned for later this month will offer another opportunity.

The Five Rivers District, which serves Cole, Osage, Moniteau, Gasconade and Maries counties, already has held most of its School Nights to Join Scouting events at area elementary schools - where volunteers helped to recruit 157 new Cub Scouts at the start of the school year, according to a September news release.

The Cub Mobile Rally planned Oct. 27 on Main Street down from the Missouri State Capitol will be another in-person opportunity for sign-ups, Five Rivers' Executive Kris Andrae said.

The event is for scouts, but interested children will have the opportunity to meet with Cubmasters, and there will be a table for sign-ups, Andrae said. The event is planned from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Otherwise, he said, families are welcome to call him at 573-338-7188 or visit beascout.org. Andrae's email address is [email protected].

Cub Scouts serves youth in kindergarten through fifth grade.

Andrae said 15 of the 20 Cub Scout packs in the district have designated themselves as family packs - which means they will accept girls - with a couple of packs that have not yet decided their designations.

Packs have the options to be boys-only or girls-only, although there is not a girls-only pack within the district, Andrae said.

Within family packs, scout dens are either boys-only or girls-only.

"Most of the packs will have one to two dens for girls," Andrae said, although girls' applications are still coming in, so he could not immediately say how many girls' dens have formed.
