A Cole County man was taken into custody Sunday morning following a brief foot chase with authorities in Jefferson City.

Officers responded at approximately 10:45 a.m. to the 700 block of West Stadium Boulevard for an attempted robbery, according to police reports. Multiple calls indicated a man had attempted to steal a vehicle from a gas station patron.

James M. Davenport, 39, is accused of assaulting the vehicle owner and a child in the vehicle during the robbery attempt. He was unable to start the vehicle and instead fled on foot, police reported. As officers arrived, the suspect ran across Stadium Boulevard into the parking lot of Target.

He reportedly failed to follow the orders of the responding officers and was subdued with a Taser.

The investigation determined the suspect had arrived at Walmart in a pickup truck earlier reported stolen in Cole County. Once at Walmart, he allegedly entered the store and stole several clothing items prior to walking to the gas station.

Davenport is being held at the Cole County Jail on charges of attempted robbery, burglary, stealing a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, property damage and two counts of third-degree assault.

Neither victim was transported for their injuries as a result of the assault.
