Dollar General Literacy Organization recently awarded the Jefferson City Area YMCA Child Development Center a grant for $3,000.
The grant is intended to support YMCA literacy programs. It will be used to challenge the center's 3- to 5-year-old children and their families to read 2,000 books from June 4 through Aug. 3.
During this program, called "Summer Reading with Book Buddies," groups of children will have mascots who will act as book buddies, according to a news release from the YMCA.
The center educates more than 125 newborn to pre-kindergarten children during weekdays.
