Morgan County Sheriff's Office investigating weekend homicide

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 79-year-old man as a homicide.

Sheriff's Department personnel responded Sunday to a 911 call from a man requesting response to an ongoing assault on his wife. The man was not at the location of the assault, on Route N in Stover, according to a news release form the Morgan County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies could hear a distraught woman when they arrived at the residence. After forcing entry, they found a man unresponsive on the floor and a woman in a "hysterical state" in an adjacent room, according to the news release.

The man, later identified as Thomas Chandler, 79, of Stover, was pronounced dead after deputies and EMS personnel attempted life-saving procedures.

The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released.

The investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
