Renovation work is set to begin at Jefferson City High School in about two weeks, and many students and staff members' classroom and parking situations will be noticeably different by the time school starts in the fall - even sooner for summer school.

The Architects Alliance's Principal Architect Cary Gampher said Friday that once work on the top floor of JCHS's east wing is finished this summer, renovation work will continue downward in that wing and then transition to the first floor of Nichols Career Center, then to the north wing of JCHS.

The east wing of the high school is referred to as "Area G." After asbestos abatement work is finished, the top floor of Area G will be demolished and renovated this summer to clear space for 10 classrooms that will serve students as other parts of the building are worked on.

Gampher said the renovation of the first floor of Nichols - Areas A and B - is planned to start no later than Oct. 15. Work on Area F - the basement, first and second floors of the north-side science wing of JCHS - is planned to start no later than January 2019, he said.

There are seven areas all together - A through G, he explained.

Six mobile double-classroom units will be placed in the parking area on the north side of JCHS to accommodate students while the building is under construction.

Gampher said at least one trailer will have restrooms in it, and students will have close access to restrooms inside the school building.

He said the school district currently is negotiating the purchase of the trailers, and once the units get to the site, they'll be leveled, anchored and have utilities connected to them.

The trailers in the parking lot obviously will displace a lot of parking spots, and Gampher said there have been discussions with the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson City and The Linc to possibly use parking spaces at those facilities, especially in the parking crunch he expects come spring 2019.

Brian Shindorf, Jefferson City Public Schools chief of learning, said Friday the majority of the summer school programs for students in grades 10-12 have been moved to Simonsen 9th Grade Center, although driver's education will remain on site at JCHS.

The district's middle schools will host summer programs for students in grades six through nine.

Gampher said the rest of Area G will be finished this fall.

As students return, he said footings and foundation work for the enclosed connector that will be between JCHS and Nichols - Area C - will be in the bid process.

The new central heating, ventilation and air conditioning system will come online in each renovated section of the high school as the sections are finished, Gampher said, adding window units will still remain in place until the exterior windows are replaced throughout the building all at once - probably in summer 2019.

Gampher has said previously that job sites will be completely separated during renovation work, with distinct entrances and exits while students are on site to ensure safety.

The next wave of design details will be unveiled at the May 14 JCPS Board of Education meeting, and this will include more interior details, he said.

People now can remotely watch time-lapsed progress at the site of Capital City High School.
