Audrain County collector gives advice for Callaway taxpayers

Audrain County Collector Kate Becker has some words of advice for Callaway County residents hoping to pay their taxes in Audrain County.

While the Callaway County Collector's office is shuttered pending the appointment of a new collector, county collectors in Cole and Audrain counties have offered to accept Callaway County tax payments. However, the payment must be made in the right way, Becker said.

"We are only able to accept money order or cashier's checks made payable to the 'Callaway County Collector,'" Becker said in a Wednesday email.

She said these payments must be made in person, not over the phone.

Becker added some tax bills sent from Callaway office are incorrect, but the collector's website - callawaycollector.com - has the correct amounts listed.

"It is best to call or go online and verify the amount due before getting a money order which may be obtained at any bank, post office and some gas stations," Becker added. "The receipt we will give you will work at the license bureau to re-license your vehicles."

The Cole County Collector's office is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and the Audrain County Collector's office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, but will be closing at noon Friday.
