Jefferson City residents to vote on dissolution of Firemen's Pension Board

While many anticipate the upcoming Jefferson City Council and Jefferson City School Board elections April 3, residents also will vote on the fate of the city's Firemen Pension Board.

In January, the City Council placed a charter amendment proposing dissolution of the Firemen's Pension Board and Firemen's Pension Fund on the ballot.

City staff said Proposition A would clean up the city charter since administration of the Firefighter's Pension Plan had been transferred to the Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System (LAGERS).

Since the last group of firefighters was transferred to LAGERS, the nine-member board no longer has members or money. It stopped meeting since it has no business to take up.

"Without any members and without any money, there's no reason to have the board; so it would make sense to dissolve the board," board Vice Chairman Norm Robinson said.

The board decided in 2004 it would move members to LAGERS and since transferred new, current and former firefighters to that retirement system. In 2017, the last group to be transferred to the retirement system was retired firefighters and their spouses after the state passed legislation supporting the transfer.

Board President Kevin Bagby said dissolving the board would not impact new, current or former firefighters' retirements.

The property tax that helps fund firemen's retirements also would not be impacted, as those funds were directed to LAGERS in 2011, Bagby said.

The charter amendment originally was planned to be on the August 2017 ballot, but it did not make it to the ballots due to a lack of action by the City Council.
