The former RadioShack location in the plaza on Missouri Boulevard will soon be home to MOD Pizza, a Seattle-based company.

An artisan pizza restaurant will open this summer in the site of a former RadioShack store.

MOD Pizza plans to open a store in June in the Schnucks shopping plaza at 1709 Missouri Blvd. in Jefferson City.

Based in Seattle, the fast-casual pizza chain serves artisan-style pizzas.

A RadioShack store previously operated in the space closed shortly after RadioShack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last spring.

MOD Pizza serves 10 types of pizzas or allows customers to create their own pizzas from 30 toppings. The company does not charge by the topping like most pizza places, so it encourages customers to experiment with different toppings. The restaurants also sells salads, garlic bread strips and cinnamon bread strips.

The company has about 300 locations nationwide, including in Kansas City, Columbia and St. Louis.

Charlotte Wayte, MOD Pizza public relations manager, said the Jefferson City restaurant will hire 25-30 employees and hold a job fair in early May. The company will partner with a local nonprofit, which will receive all proceeds from sales on the store's opening day, Wayte said.

Wayte did not know when construction would begin.
