Missouri Faith Voices will host a commemoration service and march April 4 to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
The 50 Year Commemoration Service is to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 501 Monroe St. in Jefferson City, and will follow the theme, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community."
The featured speaker will be the Rev. Rodney Williams, president of the Kansas City Chapter of the NAACP. He is president of Missouri Faith Voices and a tri-chairman of the Missouri Poor People's Campaign.
Following the service - in remembrance of King's April 4, 1968, assassination while he stood in solidarity with striking sanitation workers in Memphis - participants will march to the Missouri Supreme Court building, 207 W. High St., for a rally hosted by the Missouri Poor People's Campaign. Participants will be encouraged to commit to voter engagement initiatives and other social justice efforts consistent with King's legacy, according to a Faith Voices news release.
The event will conclude with a moment of silence at 6:01 p.m., marking the time of King's assassination on a motel balcony.
